What a Week!

Well this week certainly wasn't what we expected!

The bitter cold really started last week. We made a quick trip to the Stockyards to have a day out for the first time in almost a year! My crazy girl didn't want to cancel horseback riding, so we were at the barn in temps in the thirties 3 days! We knew there was a storm coming in, but nothing could have prepared us for the damage and distress it would cause. The storm officially came in Sunday and by early Monday morning we had lost power. We were one of the lucky ones. From about 3 am Monday until Wednesday night we had power on one hour, off one hour. Many of our friends had no power for 48-68 hours! Those hours saved us. They kept our home warm (which is really important since the kids don't regulate their temperatures well) We were able to keep meds at the right temp and charge medical equipment. Monday we were thrown another curveball when we were notified that our water treatment plant had lost power and our water supply was compromised. All water needed to be boiled before eating, drinking, washing hands, etc. This is a challenge for all, but especially scary with two immune deficient kids in the house. Luckily, that was lifted a few hours ago! Through all the challenges we were able to squeeze in some fun for my Texas born kids who rarely if ever see snow and almost never get enough to play in.

Once again I was reminded of our amazing village as so many rallied around us. From church members and  friends checking in, to our neighbors venturing out on icy roads to get water before it was gone, to one of my best friends going to the store to get a few necessities to feed Maddy and my workout girls brainstorming how we would get enough safe water to mix Maddy's formula if the boil notice continued into next week. I often say how much I love living in Texas and the kindness that abounds here. It was in action fully this week as I watched so many people helping others even while they themselves were struggling. For 17 years, I have called Texas home and I have never been prouder to say I'm a Texan than this week.
